Exploring northern regions
Sam Watson recommends Kyrenia and Famagusta as destinations for both tourists and budding expats
More and more people each year are flocking to Cyprus – both as holidaymakers and expatriates – and it is really not hard to see why. There are many great locations to see in Cyprus and plenty to do for people of all ages. It is a modern country with alluring beaches, beautiful mountains and great villages to visit.
Kyrenia
If you are looking for a beautiful place to visit in the northern part of Cyprus, you may be interested in Kyrenia. It is most renowned for being a town full of history and it also has a historic harbour, too. Everything about the town is calm and relaxed and the scenery truly is beautiful. A lot of money has been spent on making Kyrenia a great tourist destination and a good place to live, but you can still see traditional markets in various areas. The investment in the area also makes it tempting for potential expats.
Kyrenia has a rich history and has survived for centuries. Many tombs dating from 1300-500BC have been discovered there and it seems that the town’s early population was able to thrive due to the fertile soil, good climate and plentiful water supply.
There is much to do in Kyrenia and even if you are not particularly interested in history, you will find that there are plenty of shops and modern touches. You can find pretty much everything that you need, from antiques to modern designer outlets. There is also a beautiful sculpted garden – the Garden of Northern Cyprus – which attracts visitors on a year-round basis. There you will find citrus orchards, fertile plains and verdant forests.
Famagusta
Famagusta was founded by the Egyptians and it is an ancient, walled city. There are craftsmen in the city who still create jewellery and pottery to traditional, long–standing designs and with techniques passed down through generations.
It is thought that Famagusta dates back to the Neolithic age. People tend to think of Famagusta as an outdoor museum as there really is so much history there to see. However, nobody truly knows much about the city’s history as there are no written records, only sporadic traveller’s accounts from the past.
Famagusta is an excellent city to visit and it can be quite a quiet area, too; you can drive for miles and not see another car. There are deserted beaches to explore, plenty of open countryside and if you do like history, the ruins of Salamis will be of great interest to you.
There is plenty to see and do in both Kyrenia and Famagusta and they truly are both beautiful places to visit, or even to live. If you are looking to get away from it all and experience new things in Cyprus, both of these destinations of plenty of variety and excitement.
