Graced by panoramic views overlooking the honey hued buildings of Valletta, Malta’s Fortina Spa Resort is widely regarded as one of the ultimate all-inclusive spa resorts in the Mediterranean.

With food, treatments, inspiration and charms drawn from European, far Eastern and American traditions, it’s easy to see why this charming resort is more than just a hotel, spa or even destination. On the coast of the city of Sliema – which, fittingly, means ‘peace, comfort’ – Fortina Spa enjoys excellent transport links. A taxi service from Malta Airport is just €20, or for a more elegant arrival, visitors can book a harbour cruise in Valletta and approach from across the bay.

Fortina’s facilities are extensive. The four spas in one – Spa Santé, Belle Ếpoque Beauty Centre, Hypogeum Body, Mind and Spirit Centre and Thalasso Spa Mediterranée – offer an ideal boost to a delightful getaway, with over 200 treatments to suit all temperaments.

Spa Santé features a range of treatment rooms to help visitors surrender their stresses and relax into the resort’s comfortable surrounds. Saunas, experience showers and relaxation and meditation rooms ease aching muscles and help detoxify the body. The Spa Mediterranée uses concentrated sea water and algae treatments – all supervised by qualified physiotherapists – to deliver anti-stress treatments, weight loss programmes and further detoxification opportunities. A thalasso therapy pool, heated to 35°C and saturated with potassium, calcium, magnesium and other salts, offers Dead Sea style bathing, with powerful jets massaging painful muscles. For pampering and indulgence, the Belle Époque centre offers traditional treatments from around the world including Thai and Chinese massage, Cleopatra bathing, Turkish mud baths and a luxurious Japanese Room, as well as the Belle Epoque Wellness System, a multi-functional beauty service using state of the art technology to spoil visitors from head to toe.

Wellness facilities continue to the accommodation, with the world’s first therapeutic spa bedrooms. Situated in a separate building from the main hotel, they offer spa treatments in elegant privacy, overlooking the hotel’s tropical garden and pool. All spa bedrooms offer large balconies with sun beds, while some also feature a private roof garden with floatation pool. Facilities include a massage shower, therapeutic bath, steam sauna and Dermalife detox technology. Standard rooms in the 17 storey, five star tower hotel offer 35sq m of climate controlled space with spectacular views of Valletta or over the hotel’s tropical garden.

Detox dining
Fortina’s six exclusive restaurants ensure that hearty appetites are looked after, although the array of healthy, locally-sourced foods ensures the resort’s efforts during the daytime don’t go to waste come dinner. Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Indian cuisines all feature for visitors who still want to travel the world from their Maltese retreat, while French, Italian and Mediterranean flavours ensure more traditional dining experiences are available.

If too much indulgence is a concern, visitors can use more old-fashioned fitness facilities in the well-equipped gym, or join the centre’s regular aerobics and yoga classes. For swimmers – if the soft tides of Malta don’t entice – there is a choice of seven swimming pools, including the large freshwater Garden pool in Fortina’s sumptuous tropical surroundings.

Guests at Fortina can also make the most of the hotel’s newly launched health tourism packages. Foretedent, the resort’s state of the art dental clinic, offers everything from a simple whitening or halitosis treatment to complete dental makeovers, including advanced cosmetic dentistry. Dermatological and aesthetic services are offered by Fortederma, including chemical peels, Botox and enhancement implants. Further services, including cosmetic surgery, joint surgery and physio and post-operative therapy are offered in conjunction with Medical Malta, a leading healthcare package provider. All Fortina’s health tourism programmes cleverly consolidate the costs of the initial consultation, travel, treatment, accommodation, post-operative care and spa treatments into their packages.

With all these touches of luxury and more than a flavour of the much cherished Maltese spirit, the Fortina Spa Resort offers the sort of experience that ensures delight is a guarantee.
