Years in the making
Marios Christofides, Chairman of Theseus, talks about his company’s project near Heraklion, winner of Overseas Living’s Best Development – Greece 2011 award
Surrounded by crystal clear, turquoise waters and golden beaches, with a breathtaking mountain-view under its deep blue sky, the Theseus Village development has all that is needed to bring a bit of heaven to earth. Although only 10 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Heraklion the Theseus complex, with its tranquil and relaxing ambience, offers a unique opportunity to investors and is suitable as a holiday or permanent residence.
“Everything has to be flawless. Only perfection is good enough,” says Theseus developer and chairman, Marios Christofides, who has been with the project since its humble beginnings. He explains: “Philoxenia, the Greek word for hospitality, benevolence and kindness, is an institution we are proud of in Greece and particularly in Crete. Moreover, there is no humidity and regular temperatures of around 30 degrees, which allows swimming from March to November. It was this that attracted me to the people and location when I first came to this heavenly place.”
Christofides established TEAK and obtained a license for the construction of the Theseus project from the Greek government in 1995. The area was a mountain region when he first set out to create this visionary development. “The progress from infrastructure implementation in 1995, to landscaping and house construction in 2001, all the way to the completion of the 26 neighbourhoods was very exciting to watch,” the chairman notes. “To give a feel for the rich history and mythology of the region all the names of our village neighbourhoods are related to the myth of Theseus,” Christofides adds.
The self-contained village, which comprises apartments in a range of designs and sizes, meets high international standards and is gaining recognition for the superior quality of construction. Each unit is grouped into neighbourhoods that offer distinguishable architectural styles and have been designed in such a way that they blend in and sit comfortably within the natural environment.
What sets it apart is that the design still ensures the privacy of the residents is retained at all times without compromising the panoramic sea views.
There are other facets that distinguish it from its competitors. For example, the development does not depend on the municipality for services as it employs around 70 staff, 20 of which are permanent, to ensure perfection is always maintained on the complex and in the area. This is in addition to the superb after-sale service that Theseus offers its residents, which comes free of charge and caters to their every need and request.
Living in Crete
If ever there was a time to invest in Greek real estate, it would be now. “Properties in Greece have suffered large price drops due to the strict austerity measures imposed by the government,” says Christofides.
The Theseus Village offers all the necessary amenities imaginable and more. Be it internet access for the entire complex, exquisite shopping areas, delivery services, delectable food on tap, high quality hospitals, private clinics and many authentic Cretan taverns nearby. Around half of the residents are locals, while the remainder comprises a range of oversees nationalities including Scandinavian, Austrian, French, German, Swiss, Belgian, Italian and Spanish.
Theseus is 15 minutes from Heraklion airport – the largest charter flight airport in Greece, receiving well over 2.5 million tourists a year. Adventurers, historians and those who enjoy exploration will certainly find what they are looking for in the winding labyrinth of Knossos, the largest Bronze Age archaeological site and the ceremonial heart of the ancient Minoan Kingdom. Only a stone’s throw away is Agia Pelagia with its beautiful, expansive bays and Fodele, the birthplace of El Greco the painter, where one can find the museum that was built in his honour.
The village has already completed 126 sales and has been rewarded with widespread customer satisfaction. Special, discounted prices also apply. The apartment choice is vast and ranges from 65m2 to 500m2 houses, villas, and maisonettes.
