After viewing almost 70 properties he finally found his perfect holiday home, in an idyllic setting close to the mountains of Serra de Tremuntana. Surrounded by traditional Spanish courtyards, verandas and terraces, the spacious finca-style property even features a beautiful well within its extensive grounds.
Although a new build, Mr Slater’s home has been carefully designed to look like a traditional finca property with an original Spanish-style theme. “Its individuality, elegance and rustic appeal was so compelling we just couldn’t walk away.” says Mr Slater.
“When we first moved in the house seemed to only have huge baths instead of showers – this was the first thing we remedied by recruiting local artisans who we felt were the only craftsmen who would be really sympathetic to the style and personality of the property – they ensured that the showers blended in perfectly by using the same stone.”
Finding local craftsmen to carry out authentic looking adaptations was one thing. However, sourcing furniture in the locality to complement the character of Mr Slater’s ‘perfect home’ was far from easy. “Initially we tried to find furniture and furnishings locally because we expected them to be in keeping with the house. Sadly it became very frustrating trying to find classic furniture with which to furnish such a rustic finca.”
Mr Slater wanted to introduce his own style to the home whilst at the same time being sympathetic to the quality and personality of the property. He was eventually introduced to Tomlinsons, a company based near York which specialises in antique and reproduction furniture.
“Working only from maps and plans of the house, they were able to provide us with absolutely everything from traditional terracotta pots, which we use in the kitchen, to beds, lamps, rugs, lighting and even a penny-farthing that now lives outside the front door!”
“We believe the finca has an elegant and rustic feel with a hint of finesse and hope that the style complements and absorbs the personality of the entire property – something, which would not have been achievable without the help from Tomlinsons. Plus, we had the satisfaction of knowing that our antique pieces were unique to us.
Our guests regularly comment upon the furniture because of the flawless mix between old and new pieces.”
