Oubaai’s launch in December 2001 in an old farm house set in motion a mammoth operation of planning, visualisation and construction by a team of committed professionals. This team successfully brought the development to a spectacular conclusion with the opening of the Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa in December 2009. It was a glittering affair, with various ambassadors from many nations attending the function.
The addition of the internationally recognized Hyatt Regency brand has led to the resort establishing itself as the premiere golfing and leisure development in South Africa’s Garden Route.
The development boasts many spectacular facilities. For the golfer there is an Ernie Els designed championship, links style golf course, chipping & putting greens, pro shop, driving range and golf academy.
Those that are more energetic can enjoy all the lifestyle centre has to offer, with a fully equipped gym, biokineticist, pilates studio, squash court, tennis court, children’s play area, leisure desk, heated lap pool and swimming pool. There is also the scenic Oubaai heritage trail that winds through forests, past the river gorge and along the seaside cliffs. For those that enjoy fishing there are various excellent points in the bay or along the cliffs below.
The proximity of Oubaai to the Herolds Bay beach means that sports such as surfing and body boarding can be enjoyed. The beach is safe and has a wave pool for the children, making it suitable for family days out.
The development is unique in that there is a retail component with various tenants such as an estate agent, salon, jeweller, supermarket, boutique, art gallery and an ATM.
Oubaai offers four restaurants, those being the Member’s Clubhouse, Club House, Cucina for all day dining and the Waterside Bar & Grill for premiere dining. The coffee shop at the Waterside Bar offers decadent treats together with speciality coffees and teas.
The Hyatt Freesia Spa offers a wide range of treatments in a rejuvenating environment with an indoor pool and relaxation area, including various single and couples treatment rooms.
Elsewhere, the luxuriously adapted convention centre has a ballroom, wedding chapel, various breakaway rooms and a boardroom.
The Garden Route
Oubaai is situated just ten minutes drive from the city of George and the only five minutes from the George Airport. The major tourist towns of Mossel Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Oudtshoorn and Wilderness are all within an hours’ drive of the resort.
The residential component of the estate consists of 322 spectacular view sites spread out along the river gorge, golf course and ocean side. Views are diverse but from most points the majestic Outeniqua mountain range can be seen. There are also ample opportunities to take in views of the nearby forests and, beyond them, the sea. The development has been rapid and half of the sites have already been developed. With only 19 sites remaining, those wishing to get involved would be wise to do so without hesitation.
The Village Apartments at Oubaai (128 in total) have taken their inspiration from ancient fortified villages, offering residential clusters radiating from a central core which provides communal amenities and facilities. The most unique feature is the water body, in the form of cascading waterways and ponds, servicing the waterfront properties all along its edge.
The water body is flanked by a promenade making for easy pedestrian access. In addition, walking routes are structured to take advantage of unique settings, focal points and destinations.
This design brings the countryside together in a way that maintains a genuine sense of privacy – so crucial to each individual apartment – but still manages to encourage a feeling of communal contact. The Village has been planned with care to preserve the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, and offers co-existence with the natural environment. Wherever you are in the Village, a constantly changing tapestry of water and land, of season and fauna, will please your eye. With only a few apartments still available, the time is perfect to invest in this spectacular development.”
