Founded in 1977, St. George's University is an international centre of education that has drawn students and faculty from over 140 countries

On the small Caribbean island of Grenada lives a tightly woven community of locals embracing travellers from all over the world. The subtropical isle is home to a rich cultural history and exotic foods and spices experienced by thousands of visitors each year. Surprisingly, among those travellers, young people have been seen scurrying about, carrying books and probably preparing for their next serious exam… at St. George’s University.

St. George’s University’s Schools of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Arts and Sciences are located on the True Blue peninsula, in the southwest corner of the island, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. With this international focus, students develop the distinctive social and professional skills they need to practice medicine and veterinary medicine anywhere in the world. The same internationalism is now part of Grenada’s present culture, with over 3,000 students interacting with the local citizens, living locally, shopping, mounting cultural shows and festivals from their home countries, attracting world-class scientists and researchers – bringing the world right to the doorstep of the tiny island nation.

Immeasurable culture
As students come to Grenada from everywhere else, they are welcomed into a unique blend of African, English and French cultures. The students and their families and friends can immerse themselves in Grenada’s rich history of museums, tours and markets. During study breaks, students also find themselves partaking in myriad extracurricular activities, including hiking, exploring, sailing or diving. Though many languages are spoken, English is the national language.

Health and wellness
The health of a nation is the wealth of a
nation, and in keeping with this, for over
three decades, student volunteers have run island-wide health clinics, recently broadening the service to include animal care by the veterinary medical students.
Jeff Donowitz, member and founding president of the Students for Global Health student organisation, developed the Angel Mountain Health Fair, which is the most popular event during the year for the students and the Grenadian community. “To see our medical students learn their clinical skills under the auspices of community service,” says Donowitz, “has been a fantastic experience.”

For over 30 years, University students
have nested in the community, existing amongst the locals in peace and prosperity. The University is proud that its students, graduates and faculty have played a pivotal role in the continuing successes of Grenada, as increased local construction, supermarket expansion, restaurant creation and other services for the University community have bolstered the country’s economy. And, for
their part, Grenadians take pride in the
notion that their country holds a warm place in the hearts of over 8,000 St. George’s University alumni across the globe.
