The walls of the city, for more than two thousand years, have preserved precious jewels of art, history and culture. The same things that give citizens and visitors from all around the world, a unique and seductive sight today
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Verona has enchanted painters, poets, travellers and distinguished personalities from every place and from all ages. Strolling around in the narrow streets of Verona means experiencing glimpses of myriad cultures and historical ages: the Nordic look of its Austrian past is married with a sunny face, typical of every Italian city. Signs of its sumptuous Romanic origins, a strong Medieval mark, grand Renaissance architecture and strong fortifications that protect Verona are in every corner. And if you are an opera lover, Verona is the place to be with its Summer Opera Festival that goes on stage in the Arena.Besides all the natural and artistic beauty, Verona is also an important commercial centre close to Milan and on the Brenner motorway making travelling to northern Europe easy. The Garda Lake is the summer spot for every local, a riviera holiday less than 20km from home. It is the biggest and most typical of the Alpine foothill lakes. It gives the visitor a Mediterranean spot in the south, flat and enclosed from the sweet slopes of the Olive Riviera, but it suddenly changes a few kilometres northwards.
This part is dominated by the Monte Baldo as the lake narrows to become a fiord. Cultural hub Among the most well-known villages and resorts of the Garda Lake is Bardolino, famous worldwide for its exciting night life and for its Bardolino ruby red wine produced from the vineyards of the surrounding hills, Lazise and Peschiera. All three are in the so-called Olive Riviera. Malcesine, on the other hand, is exactly at the foot of Monte Baldo. It is an ideal starting point for wonderful walks or biking on the Baldo where, in winter, it is possible to ski.
The western side of the Lake, Sirmione and Salo above all, is where the Liberty style is expressed in Villas that are directly by the lake. Another must-see of the province of Verona is Valpolicella. This is part of the territory that goes from the north of Verona, on the Lessini Mountains along the River Adige up to the Garda Lake. This is one of the most important production zones of the best wines in the world. Birthplace of 'Valpolicella', 'Recioto' and 'Amarone', it is one of the most sought-after residential areas of Verona.
