The original hamlet of Vicarello di Volterra, dating back to late medieval times, includes a chapel mentioned in an early notary’s document dating back to 1298. The property was owned by the rich family of Guelfuccio dei Mannucci until 1422 when it was bequeathed to the Monastero Olivetano di Sant’Andrea di Volterra. In 1784 the monastery was suppressed by the Grand Duca Pietro Leopoldo and the entire estate was bought by the wealthy Incontri family from Volterra who transformed it into the residential villa known as “Fattoria di Vicarello”. It was lived in by Giuseppe Gaetano Incontri’s brother, Paolo Cosimo Incontri, who was the Bishop of Volterra from 1806 to 1848. The villa’s interiors were decorated in the second half of the 1800s by the brothers Lodovico and Francesco Gamberucci, highly sought-after artists amongst the Volterranean aristocracy. After various vicissitudes and years of abandonment, Vicarello di Volterra has returned to its original function: a luxurious country residence.
