Sea of tranquility
Perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean, Alila Hotels’ Uluwatu resort has to be seen to be believed
Alila Villas Uluwatu, Bali, is a magnificent ode to the beauty of the Indonesian island, situated on an elevated plateau running along the southern coast. Although its horizon-gazing views may give the impression of seclusion, the complex’s out-of-the-way location is actually only 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport.
Uluwatu’s 84 villas are spread across a beautiful site overlooking the Indian Ocean. The villas – which vary in size from single-bed properties to private villas – aim to integrate Bali-inspired living traditions with serene luxury. The development has been designed by renowned Singapore-based architects WOHA, who endeavoured to use as many Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles as they could. The resort is registered for Green Globe certification, and will be the first hotel in Bali to get the highest level of certification for ESD.
No matter the size of the villa, the properties at Uluwatu are all designed to emphasise personal space, luxurious comfort and spectacular views. Interior designs tend to be open-plan, with unique building materials (all locally sourced) such as lava rock roofs and bamboo ceilings, incorporated to channel the natural sea breeze through the open buildings.
The site offers 52 one-bedroom villas (45 with double beds, seven with twin beds), two two-bedroom pool villas, five three-bedroom cliff-side pool villas and 25 private villas. Private villas can reach as big as 2,400m2 and provide the pinnacle of what Alila Villas Uluwatu has to offer. All villas come equipped with high-quality furnishings – including 32” TVs and indoor and outdoor showers – as well as a private bar, private pool and outdoor dining areas.
Private (hillside) villas offer unrivalled panoramic views over the landscape and ocean, and are arranged in tiers. Living rooms and bedrooms open out onto infinity pools and sun decks, while walkways and bridges connect the living areas to relaxation pavilions and swimming pools. Villa owners benefit from unrestricted access to all the resort’s facilities (see below) and property management services, including around-the-clock security and maintenance of your villa and common areas.
In-villa hospitalities include luxuries such as pillow menus and more practical help such as arrival, departure and immigration assistance. The hosting service offers three levels, which guests and owners can choose from. ‘Private’ host services are available if an when requested, ensuring the visitor is left to their own devices. ‘Discreet’ host services will be regularly delivered but will aim to allow the greatest privacy possible. ‘Indulgent’ services provide a 24-hour personalised butler service to cater to every whim.
Beyond the villas themselves, the facilities on the complex are of exceptional quality. The Warung restaurant offers traditional Indonesian and Balinese cuisine both indoors and out, while the CIRE restaurant provides contemporary western cuisine prepared using local produce. Both provide beautiful, serene locations to enjoy quality food.
Elsewhere, the Spa Alila offers wellness and health facilities – including extensive spa treatments – as well as 24-hour gym. There is also a library, a 50m cliff edge swimming pool, a 24-hour medical clinic, a boardroom and multiple wedding venues. Chauffeur service is offered to and from the local airport and, if desired, for local transport as well.
From April to October, average daily temperatures tend to be around 27oC, while November to March is hotter and more humid, with average temperatures around 32oC.
